Amy's *fun* Healthy Holiday Tips

Monday, 16 November 2015
It has been a beautiful fall in our part of the world.  Sunshine, brightly colored leaves, fresh crisp air and lots of blue skies.  The kids and I have LOVED being outside and soaking it all in.  We've even been to the beach a few times enjoying the early sunsets.
Before our eyes, we're quickly rolling into the holiday season!  One of the first events I'm looking forward to is a 5K Turkey Trot I'm organizing for our neighborhood!
This is an easy and fun way to get out and exercise before your Turkey Day festivities.  Almost every city offers a Turkey Trot, check out one near you and register.
Or, Create Your Own!
  • Email a few neighbors, friends, family members and before you know it, you'll have an eager group ready to join you for a little exercise on Thanksgiving morning.
  • We're offering coffee, fruit and some yummy treats afterwards.
  • Try baking up my some of my favorite (and easy!) applesauce muffins, or Smitten Kitchen's amazing Banana Bread.
  • Now THAT's incentive to finish! :)

I've been getting some great feedback for our "Trot" so far, my neighbors are excited!  I’ve also mapped out a one-mile loop where folks can walk with strollers. Pregnant mommas might run/walk the 3 miles, or choose the 1 mile loop.  There are options for everyone!

With temptation everywhere you turn this time of year, here are a few suggestions for how to stay on track this holiday season...

Clara Almonds
*SNACK: I have snacks on hand all the time. One of my favorites is my own trail mix of raw and roasted nuts with no salt, throw in a handful of cranberries or dried apricots to help with sweet cravings. I keep trail mix (and apples) in my car and diaper bag. My kids love it and it curbs the need to grab unhealthy snacks.
*WATER: With the air getting drier, keep your water available to remain hydrated.  Feeling hungry? Drink water first before you grab a snack.
*PORTIONS: Remember portion control.  Except on Thanksgiving.  Come on, seriously, indulge a little :)
*CONTROL: If you’re invited to a party, offer to bring a healthy option like a veggie tray with homemade hummus or olive tapenade. Or bring a fresh green salad or simple steamed veggie side dish.

*MOVE: Even though winter is approaching, it still feels great to get outside for a walk or run. You'll be amazed at how quickly your body temperature warms up and you'll soon be quite comfortable breathing in the crisp air.

Remember, you've got options.  Don't think you have to apply all of these tips, take one or two that might work for you... The holidays are supposed to be, uh, jolly!  So have fun and enjoy yourself!  Just remember to balance out with some exercise, water and healthy snacks every now and then.  Life's too short to worry about how many slices of pie you ate ;)

Enjoy!
